Università Sapienza Roma

Sapienza University, which was founded in 1303 by Pope Boniface VIII in Rome, is one of the oldest universities in the world and a top performer in international university rankings. The future of Sapienza is firmly rooted in its rich past and the academic and research excellence of its community. Sapienza’s mission is to catalyse the development of a knowledge society by promoting research, education and international cooperation. The 115,000 students enrolled at Sapienza can choose from over 250 degree programmes (Bachelors, Masters and PhDs) and 200 specialisation courses, while the “Scuola Superiore di Studi Avanzati” runs honours programmes and free tuition for its best students. Thanks to its extensive network of universities from around the world, Sapienza provides its students with a wide range of international opportunities, including double-title degrees, scholarships for writing theses abroad, apprenticeships and stages in European and non-European countries, and international doctorates.

Prof Anna TramontanoBiocomputing Unit, Department of Physics: Anna Tramontano is the ELIXIR-ITA representative for Sapienza University. Her laboratory is a multidisciplinary unit established in 2001. Research in the group is devoted to the computational analysis of biological data, the development of methods for the analysis of genomes and proteomes and the applications of such methods to problems of biomedical interest.

Prof Stefano Pascarella, Dipartimento di Scienze Biochimiche: Prof. Pascarella works on the development of software for protein structure analysis, on the in silicio analysis of the structure, function, evolution of pyridoxal 5′-dependent enzymes and extremophilic enzymes; on the characterisation of transcriptional regulators of the MocR family, and on the prediction of the effects of mutations on proteins involved in diseases.

Dr Alessandro PaiardiniDipartimento di Biologia e Biotecnologie “Charles Darwin”: The research activity of Dr Paiardini focuses on the development of computational tools (in the field of homology modelling, molecular dynamics, docking and evolutionary analysis) and their application to the characterisation of protein targets for the development of therapeutic agents.

Dr Veronica MoreaIstituto di biologia e Patologia Molecolari (CNR) & Dipartimento di Scienze Biochimiche (Sapienza): The work of Dr. Morea is about the relationship between sequence, structure and function of proteins and tRNAs, protein structure and function prediction and design of proteins and peptides for biomedical applications (e.g., antibody humanization; ferritin-based nanoparticle carriers for targeted delivery; peptides able to rescue defects due to pathogenic point mutations in mitochondrial tRNAs; peptides endowed with pro- or anti-angiogenic activity).
