The Politecnico di Milano is one of the best scientific-technological universities in the world, ranked 1st in Italy and among the world top universities in the three areas of specialization according to the QS World University Ranking: 5th in Design, 10th in Architecture and 13th in Engineering.

Founded in 1863, Politecnico di Milano focuses on the quality and innovation of its teaching and research, promoting the culture of sustainable development and strengthening a fruitful relationship with business and productive world by means of experimental research and technological transfer.

The Dipartimento di Elettronica, Informazione e Bioingengeria (DEIB) at Politecnico di Milano is one of the largest European ICT departments. With nearly 1000 members, researchers, collaborators, PhD students, technical and administrative staff, the Department is a vital institution capable of promoting education, fundamental and applied research, and technology transfer to companies.

One particular research focus within the computer science section of DEIB regards bioinformatics, medical informatics, the integrated management and analysis of high-throughput genomics and other biomedical data, and the development of respective information systems, Web applications and databases.
