IFOM - Istituto Fondazione di Oncologia Molecolare

About

IFOM, The Molecular Oncology Institute, was established in 1998 by the AIRC Foundation.

The “motto” Fighting Cancer through Research drives every action and initiative undertaken at the institute.

IFOM stands out as a unique entity in cancer research, bringing together talented scientists worldwide to study the molecular mechanisms behind cancer with the goal of improving diagnosis and treatment. From DNA repair and chromosome replication to metabolism and organoid research, every question is pursued with scientific rigor and innovation.

In the early 2000s, IFOM began a comprehensive exploration of the cellular processes leading to cancer, particularly in the early detection and characterization of cancer-related mutations.

In 2023, with the launch of the Athena strategic plan, the institute broadened its scope to include areas such as translational research, molecular diagnostics, and pharmacogenomics, alongside the launch of national and international collaborations for pioneering clinical studies

IFOM prides itself on leading scientific trends rather than following them. The institute has adopted groundbreaking experimental approaches such as mechanobiology, 3D tumor tissue organization, liquid biopsies, and the application of artificial intelligence in oncology. These cutting-edge tools help IFOM push the boundaries of cancer research, with a strong commitment to excellence and innovation. The institute’s ultimate goal remains clear: to advance human health by advancing cancer research and treatment.

The IFOM Institute currently has approximately 300 staff members, with around 70% being researchers from about 30 different nationalities. The institute includes 26 research groups and 15 specialized Core Facilities. It has an average of 144 publications annually over the last 5 years. In 2023 alone, IFOM conducted 14 clinical studies, published 137 scientific papers, and managed 83 funded projects.
